Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system caused widespread sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons were halted on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause approximately millions in dollars in damage to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
